How to Clean and Remove Lichen
Bio-Shield® Cleans and Removes Lichen from any Exterior Surface.
Lichen causes severe damage to protective and decorative coatings and is extremely difficult to remove with water blast cleaning or scrubbing alone. Waterblast cleaning is not effective - the lichen will begin to regrow immediately from the residue left behind.
The best way to remove all lichens is to apply Bio-Shield - this will kill the lichens, clean up the surface, without water blasting or scrubbing and keep it clean for extended periods.
- Easy spray-on application - A single saturation coat is effective.
- No Water Blasting or Scrubbing is needed.
- Bio-Shield® protects from algae and lichen regrowth
The Best Way to Remove Lichen - with Bio-Shield®
Follow these 3 simple steps to ensure a complete kill and removal of the lichen, and long lasting protection
- Ensure the lichen is dry or slightly damp before application
- Apply the Bio-Shield to saturate the lichen and stay wet for 10 to 15 minutes
- Allow the treated surface to dry for 2 to 4 hours before rain
The key to successfully cleaning and removing lichen is to apply the Bio-Shield solution to saturate the lichen through to the base of the growths, and ensuring it does not dry out to quickly. Aim to allow drying over 10 to 15 minutes to ensure the Bio-Shield gives a good kill. Application on a cloudy day or early morning will assist.
You will notice a slight color change in most lichens once Bio-Shield is applied as it penetrates and kills the lichen.
The main reason other outdoor cleaners fail to kill lichen is the application has not saturated the growth and it is drying out to quickly.
Once the lichen has been killed it will breakdown and be washed away by rain over a 3 to 12 month period.
No waterblast cleaning or scrubbing is needed to remove the lichen.
A surface treated with Bio-Shield will stay clean for 2 to 3 years.
Re-apply the Bio-Shield at the first sign of regrowth for a fast clean up and to keep the treated surface clean.
What is Lichen?
Lichen is an organism composed of algae or cyanobacteria (or both) living among the filaments of a fungus in a relationship that benefits each growth. Lichen prefers alternate wet and dry conditions and will grow on any exterior surface from alpine to sea level environments.
Lichen secretes a mild acid to breakdown the substrate it grows on. Lichen on Colorsteel destroys the high quality protective coating, exposing the base steel to rust and expensive repairs.
